In a nutshell: One of the best cafés in Durham
Opening hours: Mon-Sun 9.30am-5pm
Example price of a meal: Around £4 for a sandwich, around £6 or slightly more for a quiche or pie. Not the cheapest lunch if you add on drinks and desserts, but you get a lot for your money.
Dishes to try: Vennels has a fantastic menu, but the fresh morning scones are a particular hit and go very quickly, so you should get there in time. The chicken and grape sandwich with tarragon mayonnaise is one of my favourites, as well as the delicious range of huge quiches and impressive cakes.
Best feature: Fantastic quality home-made food in very satisfying portions, in a cosy, historic atmosphere.
Worst feature: Navigating your tray of food and drinks up the stairs!
